turned on the tap.
In August 2026 we travelled to Kajiado County, Kenya — about 80 kilometres south of Nairobi — and opened a solar-powered water point built with Project Maji. Water now runs minutes from home.

WHY WATER
Clean water is
the whole point.
For 18 years we have done one thing in the UAE: put safe drinking water at the tap and take plastic bottles out of the picture. Ten thousand homes later, the mission has not changed.
What changes is where it applies. In Dubai, clean water is a question of quality - what you filter out and what you leave in. In Kajiado it is a question of distance. Water is carried home in twenty-litre jerrycans, by hand or by donkey, and the round trip is measured in hours.
Same mission. Different problem. So we funded a solution to the second one - and we went to see it switched on.

THE SYSTEM
What we funded —
and why it lasts.
Handpumps break. Across rural Africa a large share of them fail within a few years, and the community is back where it started. Project Maji builds something different: an elevated tank fed by a solar-powered pump, engineered for a fifteen-year service life, with remote monitoring and a small local payment that funds its own upkeep.
That last part matters most. This is not a gift that quietly degrades. It is infrastructure with a maintenance model behind it.

We did not build a well ourselves, and we will not claim to. Project Maji is a not-for-profit social enterprise with eight years of operations across Ghana, Kenya and the UAE, and a head office here in Dubai. They select the community, drill and build, train the local operators, and keep the system running long after the visitors have gone home.
Our part was to fund it — and to show up on the day.

We are not going to tell you this fixes anything on its own. Here is what we have committed to instead.

Project Maji trains a local operator and committee to run the water point. Maintenance sits on a scheduled contract, not on our goodwill.
We report the numbers
Usage and uptime are monitored remotely. Project Maji commissions independent evaluation, and we will update this page each year with what the data shows.
